Anzac Day 1991
ANZAC DAY 1991
A very successful day was enjoyed by all our members who attended this year, according to the feedback through the grapevine, and why not when you are with old mates recapping on past memories of yesteryear, you naturally enjoy yourself.
The day started out at the rally point under the banner, where members were searching out mates who they had not seen for years. Trying to recognise the past youth behind the grey hair, party conditioned waist lines and receding hair lines is not easy, then all of a sudden the penny drops and you hear, "OH YES, YOU ARE etc. Also on this day many members renewed old mateships from our first march and reunion last year, and no doubt many a story was told about the "good olde days".
When our turn came to participate in the march N.G.V.R. led off with Ken MacGowan and John Holland carrying the N.G.V.R. banner, this was a very proud moment for both of them as their dads had served in WW11 - Bill MacGowan in NGVR and Frank Holland in Z Special Force. It was pleasing to see so many of our older members of this Unit turn out for this occasion, GOOD EFFORT FELLOWS.
Then came the drummers of the John Paul College, followed by the P.N.G.V.R., who I must say looked very impressive in their new outfits. There has been a lot of constructive comment from many quarters on how well the Unit was turned out. However, there was one "Odd Bod" who marched at the side in Juniper Greens, he was really reliving the past and it certainly brought back fond memories to his wife. Yes Col, the uniform WAS complete even down to the red Infantry sash.
The drummers kept everybody in step this year as did Karl, who carried out the task of CSM with that voice which everybody knew over the years.
The reunion was held at the Majestic Hotel, with yarns being told and the elbows being exercised. After the various toasts Pat Newton was presented with a Unit plaque by Colonel Green in memory of Major Ken Newton. Ken's son took his father's place and marched with the Unit this year. Photographs of the presentation were taken by Tom Dowling, they are of good quality and are available at $1.00 each, all proceeds going to the Association funds at our next reunion.
It was nice to see more wives at the reunion this year, good on you Girls, keep it up, as it is nice to have our better half with us on such occasions.
The day spoke for itself with many members still enjoying themselves when I left the Majestic at 1730 hrs to head home after a very full and enjoyable day.
For those members who were not in Brisbane this year don't forget the same time next year, EVERYBODY IS WELCOME.
