David Goldhardt,
6 Twin View Rd, Elimbah, Qld 4 September 2022

Sir.

I would would like to thank the members of the PNGVR who were at the funeral of Michael J Zimmermann on Friday 2nd September 2022 at Caboolture and Districts Lawn Cemetery, Deception Bay, Qld.

I am ex Australian Regular Army from 1975 to 1984 with the rank of Corporal., Signals, Enoggera Brisbane, Victoria Barracks Brisbane and Lavarrack Barracks Townsville.

Due to chronic medical problems, I now have a walking and movement disability where I have to now use a Walking Aid of a Wheelie Walker and am extremely unsteady on my legs and feet..

At the funeral grave site, I saw the PNGVR members waiting to form an Impressive Guard of Honour and approached one gentleman introduced myself mentioning briefly my regular Army Service and Rank, and asked for a spare Poppie if they had one.

Another gentleman approached me at the first mans request and after a second introduction and again rank and details to him he reached into his pocket and pulled out one and gave it to me.

He then offered to assist me to stand up from my walker and take the two/three steps to get to the coffin when we reached that part in the funeral service.

I thanked him and went to sit by the allocated seats where I only had 3 steps to get to and place my given Poppie on the coffin.

After one of the first military person approached the coffin, he made an excellent speech to the gathered guests, explaining the tradition of why poppies were used and placed, placed his and all the rest of the PNGVR placed there, so I stood up to place mine and within a few seconds of me standing, one if the military gentlemen was holding my elbow and I had not realised he was anywhere near me,

He helped me the short way to the coffin, held me while I placed my Poppie and helped me back to my seat.

I am sorry I have forgotten the gentleman's names, , but I would like to ask that you please pass on my Sincere thanks to ALL OF THEM them for helping me as well as being there for Michael Zimmermann Funeral.

I was born in Madang PNG, To American Lutheran missionaries who left USA in 1947 and were living in Asaro (Asaroka now called Asaloka) 12 miles west of Goroka, At age 8 went to a mission boarding school in Wau, For High school flew to Brisbane each year into second boarding school,
After high School, got mechanic apprenticeship with Ela Motors Lae with Michael for 2 years then Ela Motors Madang for two more years before moving South to Australia and joined the Australian Army.
My parents spent 43 years in Asaro, Goroka and Kainantu before moving South to Australia.

Thank you very much for Your PNGVR Group for their service at the funeral and what they did to help me..
